handloom fabrics are traditional handlooms made in Narayanpet in Mahbubnagar
District, A.P., India. Known by its
characteristic Zari check patterns on a silk or cotton body with a contrasting
colour temple border and plain border on both sides, Narayanpet Handlooms
originally came through a Marathi influence; patronage of Shivaji, the Marathi
ruler. Much later through Lokapalli Sansthanam, an organized body, it actually
flourished. Employing vegetable dyes to the extent possible, the Narayanpet
Handlloms have fast colours. Geographical Indication (GI) Status has been
awarded to Narayanpet in April 2013.
