Silk
is a natural fibre that has strength, has a shimmery lustrous appearance, is
airy, soft and comfortable and keeps the body cool in summer and warm in
winter. It has great acceptability in absorbing any colour of dye, drapes well
and is a great rich-feel fabric that is sought for grand occasions.Cotton
is a moderately strong natural fibre that is soft, airy, comfortable, and has
no lustre. It too has good acceptability for any colour of dye, has a good
comforting feel, but does not drape as well as silk. It also keeps the body
cool in summer and warm in winter.Silk
requires more care and attention as compared to cotton but both fabrics do well
under normal conditions of use.Kanchi
is a blend of silk and cotton which
assumes the strength of silk and the comparatively better wash resistant
qualities compared to sik. The fabric blend possesses the good attributes of
both fabrics with a higher tolerance than silk in some respects.
Fusion
experiments in patterns, designs and other adornments in a host of pleasing
colours have yielded laudable creations in Kanchi fabrics. kanchi fabrics are
manufactured both by handlooms as well as power looms.Kanchipuram is situated on the north-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu. Kanchipuram
is known as silk city and famous for handloom, machine woven silk sarees,
hand-woven silk fabrics and zari sarees. Kanchipuram silk sarees are exotic pieces of
art, woven from pure mulberry silk and available in a variety of designs, these
sarees have vibrant colors and are decorated with fine gold thread. Peacock,
parrot, swan, lion, mango, chariot, sun, moon are some motifs woven into
kanjivaram pattu saris. Latest kanchi pattu silk sarees are designed with
crystals, kundans and beads are marvelous. Kanchi pattu Silk Sarees are Ideal
gift for festivals and special occasions like weddings, bridal occasions,
Temples, cultural programs, parties and birthdays. Designer kancheepuram silk saree of artistic
floral work and modern border is pride of the south Indian bride .
The gold visual art designs on the
Kanchi pattu sarees are made by dipping the silk thread into liquid gold and
silver. That makes the saree more valuable and prestigious. The heavy silk
sarees with golden borders and rich ethnic designs are very popular in India A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain
products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g.
a town, region, or country). The use of a GI may act as a certification that
the product possesses certain qualities, is made according to traditional
methods, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin.Geographical Indications are generally traditional products,
produced by rural communities over generations, that have gained a reputation
on the markets for their specific qualities.
The recognition and
protection on the markets of the names of these products allows the community
of producers to invest in maintaining the specific qualities of the product on
which the reputation is built. It may also allow them to invest together in
promoting the reputation of the product. To weave a Kanchipuram sari
three shuttles are used. While the weaver works on the right side, his aide
works on the left side shuttle. The border color and design are usually quite
different from the body. If the pallu (the hanging end of the sari) has to
be woven in a different shade, it is first separately woven and then delicately
joined to the Sari. The part where the body meets the palluis often denoted by a zig zag line.
Suns, moons, chariots,
peacocks, parrots, swans, lions, coins, mangoes, leaves and many such motifs
are woven into Kanchipuram patterns. Other common motifs include a jasmine bud
within a square or a round frame, locally known as mallinaggu. Another is Thandavalam where parallel lines run across the
body of the Sari.As gold and silver prices
breached one high after another in 2011, Kanchipuram's traditional silk saree weavers had
a tough choice in their hands-to either reduce the use of gold and silver in
making zari, the deocrative lace that defines sarees made here, or continue
prefixing sarees with the name Kanchipuram. They couldn't do both. But
now weavers can use less of those lustrous metals without the fear of losing
the exalted Kanchipuram identity.
Since 2005, Kanchipuram
silk sarees have been protected by Geographical Indication label, which not
only certifies their geographical origin but also confirms adherence to some
production standards. One of these standards is the mix of silver and gold in a
zari, the saree's decorative lace. So, without 57% of silver and 0.6% of gold
in a zari, a silk saree made in Kanchipuram can't be called a Kanchipuram!Unnati Silks, has trendy designs,
