Today, Georgette witnessed a rapid growth in demand all over the world.

India is renowned of its handloom fabrics. ‘Georgette’ is one such unique, elegant, delicate and distinct fabric of bouncy looks, which is widely used in making saris, salwar suits, western outfits and other trimmings.

Georgette has an inevitable appraisal and emerged as a prominent winner worldwide.

Georgette, a distinctive fabric with crinkled creep-light textures of bouncy flowing looks, which is aesthetically designed with delicate and soft sheen textures, has become a comfortable, breathable and long lasting stylish fabric of women. The fabric has mingled with beautiful Indian designs and western patterns in order to gain the hearts of beholders.

Georgette is something that is always sought after, for its subtle lustre. It is basically a translucent fabric of opaque textures and crushed looks, which feels like a rough and dull fabric. It is an easily carried fabric of high absorbing quality and can be dyed in a myriad of hues and prints of various projects. Unlike some fine fabrics, georgette is also unusually strong, and it holds up well to varied wear.

There are some mythological stories around the history of Georgette. It has been said that, in 20th century, a French dressmaker (lady) introduced the first Georgette fabric to the world. It is highly believed that, Chiffon was the major source of inspiration to weave Georgette fabric.

Initially in India, it was restricted to trimming and layering purposes. Later, it has become the wowing costume of women.

Previously, Georgette garments were only worn by the royal family women to show the status (as they were expensive yet elegant).  Georgette was the richest fabric earlier to denote the class and hence most of the Georgette gowns were passed down through the ages. Later, Georgette became very popular and today, we are getting a wide range of varieties in Georgette.

Georgette is a textile which is traditionally made from silk, sometimes made of some synthetic fibres such as rayon, polyester, crepe and other nylon blends. However, the modern Georgette is mostly made of synthetic filaments.

Usually georgette gives out a crushed or twisted feel or effect, which is very much appreciated by viewers as it tends to bring out more of the physique figure of the woman wearing it.
Georgettes are basically of 2 types:
Pure Georgette
Faux Georgette

A fact about Georgette is, not all the georgettes are same, Pure Georgette exhibits soft roughness where as the other one exhibits rawness.

With the passage of time, the georgette fabric has been branched into 5 sub categories:
Jacquard Georgette fabric
Nylon Georgette fabric
Polyester Georgette fabric
Satin Georgette fabric
Silk Georgette fabric

It also comes in very bold patterns, simple prints, extensive embroideries, patch Patti works and other sequence works with contrast hues like bold shades, single solid shades, digital prints, dual colour shades etc, in order to attract the viewers.

The tendency of the fabric in order to drape very well makes it an apt choice for many women who love the soft silky yet comfortable look.

Weaving is an art that enhances the look of a dull piece into a designer piece.

India has been considered as precursor in the art of weaving textiles. A six-yard sari can be designed by lot of efforts and painstaking steps. One such meticulous process of making a sari is “weaving”.

Weave, is a method where the threads are interlaced with each other. The interstices or crossing of the threads determines the characteristic of the weave.

Weaving, an approach or way of producing a fabric by interlacing two distinct sets of yarns, which are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric, is basically a family of techniques used for several purposes in knitting. Weaving techniques are also used for decorating the clothes and household materials. Today, Indian saris are attracting the international women by their traditional weavings.

There are different methods in making fabrics or cloths other than weaving such as knitting, lace making, felting and braiding or plaiting etc. But weaving is considered as an international method in making the fabrics.

Warp and weft are the two basic steps of weaving, where the longitudinal threads are called as warps and lateral are called as wefts or fillings. The method in which these threads are interwoven affects the characteristics of cloth. Weaving basically involves in two types:
1.      Handloom,
2.       Power loom

If the weaving is done by using hands, then it will be called as handloom, otherwise it is known as power loom if it is done by using machines.

There are different types of weaves:
Plain weave is the most common and inexpensive type produce. It is simple, durable and flat in nature, where it has two types of variations in it named Rib weave and Matt weave. Crepe, chiffon, georgette, shantung, taffeta, organdie and muslin are the different fabrics come under this category.

Basket weave is also an inexpensive type like plain weave but with chequered patterns. It has regular and irregular weaves which are used in making wall hangings and pillows.

Satin weaves are smooth, soft lustrous with excellent draping qualities. Satin and satin weave fabrics such as cotton are the basic fabrics and are used in making draperies and quits etc.

Twill weaves are diagonal and fancy designs, which are used in making household uses like comforters and upholstery etc with denim as basic fabric.

Jacquard is the combination of plain, satin and twill with brocade, cotton, Lenin and Damask as base clothes, used to make wall hangings.

Leno weaves were used thousands of years ago in making fabrics. Now they are under usage of designing blankets and curtains.

Pile weaves are used to form loops like cut and un-cut pile fabrics. These are soft, absorbent and relatively inexpensive fabrics used to make carpets, rugs and towels.

Saris are the traditional Indian fabrics preferred by most women in India. It is made by weaving either by traditional methods or by modern looms. There are very many centres for the weaving of ethnic saris across India like Kanjivaram Dharmavaram, Arani, Mysore, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Banaras, Kota, Bhagalpur, Sambalpur, Bomkai, are well known for their unique weaves.

Keywords:Natural dyes,Vegetable dyes,art of dyeing,colorants,plant sources,dyeing, Natural dyed saris

India has been considered as forerunner in the art of dyeing textiles. A six-yard sari can showcase outstanding hues and shades by means of natural dyes.

Almost all organic materials produce a colour after dye-bath, but only certain plants will yield a colour which act as a dye, i.e., Natural dye.

Natural dyes are the nature provided colorants, produced from plants, invertebrates or minerals etc. The majority of natural dyes are produced from plant sources like roots, berries, leaves, bark and wood and named as vegetable dyes.

Certain plants like Apple, Alkanet, Alder, Betel nut, Blackberry, Bloodroot, Cherry, Dahlia, Dyer’s broom, Elder, Eucalyptus, Groundnut, Henna, Indigo, Marigold, Onion, Oak, Safflower, Tea, Turmeric, Wild mangos teen etc are the list of plants that are the major traditional dye producers that are most commonly used. But the choice of usage of particular plant is always based on the material with which it will be used.

The usage of natural dyes is as old as the textiles themselves. The art of dyeing has a long past and traces back to its pre-history. The evidence of the usage of dyeing is found in China around 2600 BC. Later, the countries like Egypt, Europe, India, Mesopotamia etc have started producing dyed clothes in textile industries.

Red, blue, yellow, brown, orange and green etc are the first attested colours of ancient textiles. Today, we are having multiple numbers of hues and shades from dyes.
Natural dyes are basically divided into 3 categories:
Natural dyes of Plants
Natural dyes of animals
Natural dyes of minerals
Silk like fabrics can easily coloured by dipping into dyes. But, cotton like fabrics does not react directly with the materials they are intended to colour. For such types, ‘Mordant’ is the best solution, which binds the natural dye to the fabric where the chemical reaction takes place, so that the dye is absorbed.

Many sari producers of India i.e., South Indian Sari producers like ChanderiUppadaMangalagiriDharmavaramKanchipuramNarayanpetGadwal etc and Banarasi BrocadeTantTissue, Kota, Jamdhani, Baluchari, Kantha of North Indian Saris are manufacturing pure natural and vegetable dyed traditional handlooms.

Natural dyed fabrics allows craftsman to design huge number of motifs like flowers, animals, plants, trees, birds, leaves, geometrical shapes and other human and god postures etc. Very intricate works like block printing, batik printing, brocade, embroidery, mirror, stone, kundan, zari, pearl, chamki, booti, patch etc can be easily designed onto the natural dyed fabrics.

South and North Indian saris of natural and vegetable dyed are perfectly suitable for college, classical, corporate and other working women. Silk, Cotton, Crepe, Banaras and other natural dyed fabrics of zari works and patch borders looks good for any occasion. Designer South and North Indian Saris with heavy embroidery works are apt for bridal and wedding ceremonies.
Today, dyeing has become complex, as synthetic and artificial compounds taken major place.

However, the practitioners of natural dye crafts are still producing the same quality and uniqueness, which has become much more attractive to the eye.

Unnatisilks, has trendy designs, attractive patterns, in pleasing colours and combinations in its wide collection of Vegetable Dyes Sarees, at very reasonable prices.
