Fine Silky tales of the Dupion Silk Sarees

The Dupion Silk Saree has a charismatic appeal in its unique pattern of weaving, with Nature guiding tradition on the design.

Dupion is also known as Dupioni or Douppioni. Dupion Silk is one of the purest silks in its natural form. It is easily distinguished from other forms of silk by its inherent property of lumps or silk knots within the yarn fabric.

This happens when two silkworms in creating their own cocoons, spin them so close to each other that the yarn gets tangled up. The yarn of tangled fibres is taken up in the same form in making the silk thread. The spun thread is thick, coarse and has bumps and irregularities.

The inherent qualities of the Dupion Silk Saree makes it suitable for dyeing the yarn to any colour, is  comparatively easy to sew, and is highly wrinkle-resistant. The creases on the fabric form so well that it assumes a crisp and neat look. The uneven weave with nubs (lumps of yarn) showing at regular intervals form an unconscious pattern indicative of an underlying design.

Dupion silk does not have stretch ability hence measurements would have to be exact before cutting out patterns. Also, the texture is not as fine as other silks and edges have a tendency of unravelling.

Double cocoons are usually reeled on the Charakha, or hand-spinning wheel. But the Dupion Reeling Machine has also been introduced and these days they are also used. Karnataka, is one of the main producers of this type of yarn.

The Dupion Silk Saree is woven with two threads apart from the nubs which create a shimmering effect when the fabric is viewed from certain angles.

Dupion Silk Sarees are low priced when compared to pure silk sarees. With adornments of pearls, beads, kundans and sequins they are much-preferred wear for wedding ceremonies.

Exclusive Dupion Silks with Bagru block prints, woven in the Bandhani tie-dye style are most fascinating. The Fancy Dupion Silk Saree having embroidered patch borders is also most charming.

Latest trends of block circle and diamond prints on the Dupion Silk Saree with printed border and designer pallu to match, is definitely a fashion fabric for college parties, corporate conferences and traditional festivals.

Zari buttis on the Dupion Silk sari have a resham border that render a beautiful sight. They are most suitable for wedding functions, as bridal attire and for social get-togethers.

Cotton silk sarees - fine cotton fabric blends

Cotton and silk blends in different proportions make up the cotton silk sarees where the counts vary from coarse to fine based on the closeness of the fabric weave. Cotton and silk are both natural fibres with good qualities of strength, durability and soft feel, are light weight, airy and are very comfortable. No wonder they are preferred for all-day wear for any occasion. In cotton silk the proportion of cotton to silk generally has a higher proportion for cotton hence cotton silk is not very lustrous.

Enjoying the shimmer and shine of Raw silk sarees

Silk is a natural fibre shiny and lustrous, traditionally accepted as the finest and purest in yarns, hence considered as the fabric to be worn for religious occasions and traditional festivals in India. A prevailing custom, followed till date, its look and feel, its strength and lack of creases make it the preferred fabric for Indian women. Added to it are the endearing qualities of softness, smooth feel, warm and comfortable in the appropriate climatic conditions. Silk be of any form or variety, these natural properties are common to all.

The appeal of raw silk sarees
Raw silk sarees are liked by Indian women for the simple reason that there is a slightly dull to faint lustre that gives it a special look. Because of its slightly rough texture compared to pure silk, the colors on the saree assume a strange but liked vitality. The already grand looking saree is further given touch of elegance and captivating beauty by thematic prints, lovely bootis and other such decorative features on the pallu or end piece.

The characteristic raw silk
Raw silk is a filament yarn from which the gummy substance that comes with the silken yarn has not been separated. This sericin or sticky substance is removed by putting the cocoons in boiling water so that the gum separates out. The filament yarn is too fine to be woven directly. Hence the uneven strands are reeled in by hand and uniform strands are formed to make it suitable for weaving. Raw silk is of light biege to yellow colour.

Since the yarn is not even and lacks lustre, raw silk weaving produces a slightly dull and coarser fabric than one from pure silks. Raw silk threads are washed in soapy water to get some shine and then dyeing is done. Hand reeled threads can be combined to desired thickness for thin and light fabrics and for slightly heavier fabrics. Raw silk can be dyed with both natural and artificial dyes.
