Fine cotton salwar kameez sensations from Gadwal Handlooms

Gadwal is a small town in Telangana state, India, known for its fine pure cotton handlooms. Traditional weaves in cotton, with a lot of zari work on the saree, it elevates the appeal massively. While the base of the Gadwal saree is cotton, there is a loosely attached silk border and the fabric is traditionally woven in the interlocked-weft technique, called Kupadam or Kuttu. Most of the Gadwal sarees have a rich border, a different pallu and gold or silver zari brocades. Hand crafted designs on pure gadwal cotton have traditional colours for these sarees as earth shades of brown, grey, and off-white. Mythical carvings, floral designs, exquisite designs, attractive prints with rich zari work, heighten the elegance of the wearer of the Gadwal Salwar kameez.. Of late the block printed Gadwal handloom cotton salwar kamiz having intricate silk or golden zari border and elegant dupatta, a combination of cotton and silk, is an image-booster for corporate offices, or a welcome change during festivals, traditional meetings and inaugural functions.

Salwar kameez - traditional Indian ethnic or fashion apparel?

Pochampally silk saree - Devotion and dedication undimmed over time

Pochampally, in Telangana, India, is well-known for its Pochampally brand of sarees, the base fabric being cotton, silk or a blend of the two. The exquisite finish of the saree comes through the dyeing and weaving of pre-coloured threads which are dyed according to the Ikat or Ikkat technique.
The special technique of the Pochampally silk weave
The Ikkat technique involves applying bindings which resist dye penetration to the threads in pre-determined patterns and then dyeing the threads. These threads are then woven to produce the desired pattern. When several colours are used, the dyeing process on the threads is repeated for each of the colours chosen. Then the fabric is woven with the multi-coloured threads into the pattern. Within the ikkat style of dyeing are methods of single-ikkat and double-ikkat. Single ikkat has two variants – warp ikkat where the warp threads are dyed after applying resists according to pattern on the warp threads. After that, only, is the weaving done. In the weft ikkat it is the weft threads which are coloured by applying resists before the dyeing and then weaving is done. In either case the dyeing is done prior to the weaving so carefully that the pattern emerges as the weave progresses. In the double ikkat method both the warp and weft threads are dyed before weaving. Alternatively, in the tie-dye method it is quite the reverse of the Ikkat style of dyeing. Here the threads are first woven and the resist bindings then applied to the fabric before dyeing it.

Endearing features of the Pochampally silk saree
The painstaking efforts of the weavers in maintaining the purity of dyeing and weaving, including the control and placement of threads during the weave contribute largely to the complexity of the weave patterns and pleasing appearance of the sarees. Colours that are employed for the dyeing of threads are fast and well-chosen. No wonder the outcome of the Pochampally saree displays an extraordinary ethnic skill that is hard to match. Current trends see Pochampally silk saris with traditional designs, zari borders and elegant pallus with pleasing designs and colourful prints, making it a must-buy for weddings, festivals, traditional functions and even corporate wear.

Stunning sensations in the Batik Printed salwar kameez

Batik is a process using ‘resists’ for making designs on a fabric. The conventional Batik process has a resist or a physical block in some form or the other to prevent desired areas on the fabric from being penetrated by dye. Generally wax is used as a resist in Batik. The block printed areas where resists are in place, come out as un-dyed areas in the dyed fabric and could be coloured differently in repeat wax dye process. This can be repeated several times at the same place or different places with wax-dye process time and again for every subsequent colour change.

Batik can be done with various types of dye & wax on cotton, silk and other natural fabrics. Cotton is easy to work with and generally gives best results. Repeated waxing and dyeing over the same place gets newer overlapping results. The idea in multi-layer colouring is to start with lighter shades of the dye and proceed to deeper ones. Here care is taken that wax resist is neither light nor heavy since lighter would mean possible penetration of dye onto resist area and heavy would mean the wax will not resist properly and could cause patches or dye spreads when removed.

The rarer but finer Pen Batik saris
The rarer type of Batik is Pen Batik. Fine designs are made on the fabric using ‘Tjanting’ tools. Molten wax at a certain temperature is carefully put on the design lines with Batik dropper pen. A lot of care has to be exercised. Too thin a layer could give way to colour dye through surface cracks. Temperature of the wax is normally kept between 200 and 230 degrees. In the former or conventional method vats or tubs with boiling water are used to melt away the wax. In the latter a small tub with hot water is generally preferred. After the entire resist dyeing process is over, and the wax has melted away in hot water, a neatly dyed plain or designed fabric is available.

Buy online Batik Printed salwar kameez at Unnati Silks
Unnatisilks has a collection of Pen Batik salwar kameez. Pen Batik comes out very well on handloom cottons. Unnati has a fine range of bright coloured and vibrant hued shalwar kamiz. Prints are mostly floral designs and there are some in which the motifs have flower patterns. Colours range from the medium pastel coloured to the vibrant and eye-catching.
There is striking batik on pure cotton cambric Punjabi suits with exquisite chunni having tribal dancing women in bright and vibrant colours. It is a nice piece for occasions like parties and social visits.

You have the green batik, pure cotton cambric Punjabi suits with chunni having beautiful floral design in multi-colour batik. Painting in tribal art with deep contrasts set off fine colourful patterns that are in between abstract art and line sketches. The colour combinations chosen are vibrant. The detailing is vivid and striking. It is very apt for corporate functions, and social gatherings.

Age-old traditional art in modern format – Kantha work

Kantha work is embroidery done on used apparel, renewing their looks and extending their life. It is a unique art from Murshidabad in former Bengal. Kantha Work is essentially done on old sarees, dhotis and other apparel. It is a running stitch on the sarees in the form of motifs such as animals, birds, flowers, simple geometrical shapes and scenes from everyday life.

The interesting journey of Kantha
Bengali women used to mend their old clothes by making designs from a strand of thread off the colorful border of their saris. This led to an art practiced by rural women securing them a respectable means of earning a modest income. Kantha work done on a saree gives it a wrinkled and wavy look and transforms old clothes into extraordinarily new creations. Though the running stitch is most popular for its ease, other forms of stitch such as darning stitch, satin stitch and loop stitch are also used. Kantha stitching is also employed in the making of quilts, known as Nakshi Kantha. Women use old saris and other cloth, layering them with the kantha stitch to make small blankets and bedspreads, for children. Kantha embellishes a wide range of garments, such as sarees, dupattas, shirts, bedding and a variety of other fabrics in cotton and silk. Old saris and dhotis are transformed by kantha work to serve as gifts for beloved ones.

Based on the use of the fabric, Kantha is divided into seven different types, of which Lep Kantha and Sujani Kantha are famous. Kantha is a way of life; a tradition that is still followed meticulously. kanthas are prepared for small babies to lie on, wedding kanthas are made by mothers and gifted to their daugthers and kantha is present on the ceremonial cloth meant for funeral rites.

Fine Silky tales of the Dupion Silk Sarees

The Dupion Silk Saree has a charismatic appeal in its unique pattern of weaving, with Nature guiding tradition on the design.

Dupion is also known as Dupioni or Douppioni. Dupion Silk is one of the purest silks in its natural form. It is easily distinguished from other forms of silk by its inherent property of lumps or silk knots within the yarn fabric.

This happens when two silkworms in creating their own cocoons, spin them so close to each other that the yarn gets tangled up. The yarn of tangled fibres is taken up in the same form in making the silk thread. The spun thread is thick, coarse and has bumps and irregularities.

The inherent qualities of the Dupion Silk Saree makes it suitable for dyeing the yarn to any colour, is  comparatively easy to sew, and is highly wrinkle-resistant. The creases on the fabric form so well that it assumes a crisp and neat look. The uneven weave with nubs (lumps of yarn) showing at regular intervals form an unconscious pattern indicative of an underlying design.

Dupion silk does not have stretch ability hence measurements would have to be exact before cutting out patterns. Also, the texture is not as fine as other silks and edges have a tendency of unravelling.

Double cocoons are usually reeled on the Charakha, or hand-spinning wheel. But the Dupion Reeling Machine has also been introduced and these days they are also used. Karnataka, is one of the main producers of this type of yarn.

The Dupion Silk Saree is woven with two threads apart from the nubs which create a shimmering effect when the fabric is viewed from certain angles.

Dupion Silk Sarees are low priced when compared to pure silk sarees. With adornments of pearls, beads, kundans and sequins they are much-preferred wear for wedding ceremonies.

Exclusive Dupion Silks with Bagru block prints, woven in the Bandhani tie-dye style are most fascinating. The Fancy Dupion Silk Saree having embroidered patch borders is also most charming.

Latest trends of block circle and diamond prints on the Dupion Silk Saree with printed border and designer pallu to match, is definitely a fashion fabric for college parties, corporate conferences and traditional festivals.

Zari buttis on the Dupion Silk sari have a resham border that render a beautiful sight. They are most suitable for wedding functions, as bridal attire and for social get-togethers.

The extraordinary traditional skill of Dabu Printing

Dabu Printing is an age old ethnic tradition that has stood the test of time as a unique way of dyeing and printing. Practised mostly in Rajasthan, it has churned out extraordinary fabrics of brilliant colours and mind-blowing designs that have left modern pundits dumbstruck.

The seemingly ordinary process of Dabu Printing
Dabu printing is a unique art form. This mud-resist hand-block printing is practiced mostly in the state of Rajasthan, India. Cotton is received in large bundles for dyeing and printing. Based on the order, the bundles are opened out and different sizes are measured and cut based on the fabric. Sarees would have 7 metres, dupattas 2.5 metres and so on. Each fabric is pre-washed and soaked for about 24 hours to remove starch, oil, dust, or any other contaminants which could prevent proper dyeing and printing. Then the fabric is block printed with dabu, and laid to dry in the sun. Once the mud is dry, the fabric is immersed in a dye, and again laid to dry in the sun. The process could sometimes be repeated for repeated dabu printing on top of the dyed fabric to create further layers of resist and again dye it in darker shades of the dye. Finally the fabric is washed to remove all traces of the dabu mud, revealing the resist area to be the original colour. The fabric is again dried in the sun and is ready to be packaged and sold.

Dabu Prints – an eco-friendly tradition
Dabu printed sarees undergo a rigorous process that involves a lot of not so easily available and costly natural dyes and vegetable pastes. Printed motifs like boota (corn stalk), surajmukhi or sunflower, animals and geometrical patterns are popular subjects. Pure cotton, pure silk, chiffon, crepe, georgette and super net saris are the different fabrics that have good results with Dabu prints.

Buy Dabu Printed sarees online at Unnati Silks
Unnatisilks has experimented with dabu prints mainly on handloom cottons of specific varieties since Dabu Prints produce astounding results on cotton handlooms. Take the Rajasthani cotton handlooms. There are the Venkatagiri cotton handlooms in dark shades that have stripes design, a lot of striking geometrical patterns like the zigzag pattern, huge floral bootis and designer pallus. There are also the lighter shades that have plenty of fresh floral and checks patterns as Dabu Prints with mesmerizing designer pallus.
