Dupion Silk has a magnetic appeal in its weaving in all the grandeur and colour of its native India.

Dupion, a wild, natural and purest silk of neat look and sheen, is a plain weave crisp type of silk fabric of iridescent effect, which is basically woven from two different fabrics in order to result shimmering effect. Dupion fabric is highly-wrinkle resistant fabric of exclusive irregular pattern with nubs (lumps of yarn) showing, that lends its uniqueness and is much sought after for fashion, grand occasions and drapery.

The word Dupion is an Italian word, Duplicato, which means doubling the effect, is one of the purest forms of silk in its natural way. Dupion is also called as Dupioni, Douppioni, Shantung and etc.

Dupion Silk is one of the natural and purest silk with neat look. It is such a beautiful silk woven from two different coloured fabrics gives shimmering effect. The weavers made it as a highly-wrinkle resistant fabric.

The evidence about the history and origin of Dupion is identified in India. Dupion is purely an Indian variety, Karnataka is one of the major producers of this type of synthetic fibre.

Dupion is basically lighter in weight and smoother in cloth where the creases form so well that the fabric assumes a crisp and neat look. It has an exclusive irregular pattern with lumps of yarn which lends its uniqueness.

The major equipment or tools required in making Dupion silk are: silk worms, sewing machine, substantial underline, natural and metallic colours and skilled workers.

In weaving of Dupion, warp and weft plays a major role where they together produce such a flawless plain weave crisp type of fabric.

In order to make the Silk threads, two different silk worms are used by weaver, where the two worms spin (warp) their cocoons closer to get the fibre tangled up (weft). These tangled fibres together make the silk thread.

A sewing machine is used by the weaver in order to furnish the resultant rough silk threads. To protect the fabric from sunlight, here a substantial underline is used by the weaver.

Dupion silk often comes in different colours of threads, designs and styles. In dyeing, weavers produce the fabric with rainbow like colours. Many natural and metallic colours are used in order to explore an extravagance of fabric. Dupion not only stuck to saris, salwar suits, lehengas, kurtis, but also observed in many household things like curtains, bed sheets, pillow covers, scarves, etc.

The motifs such as floral designs, stones, kundans, pearls, beads, animals, trees, leafs, fruits and other geometrical structures have become the major designs on the fabric. The best part is, as it is smoother and lighter, although it can be embroidered in any desired manner.
