Badla work involves beating gold or silver
sheets and cutting fine wires of desired size from them known as ‘badla’. This
wire is then inserted into the fabric and beaten into desired shapes with a
hammer. Plain wire is ‘badla’, thread wound around it is the ‘kasav’. If there
are spangles they are called ‘sitara’ whereas if they are mere dots, then they
are referred to as Makaiash. All these are meant to adorn the fabric
tastefully. Badla work has different forms from basic and lacking much
ornamentation to very heavy and rich work. A traditional art since Mughal
times, it has its roots in the North of India, with concentration in places
like Bareilly, Delhi and Lucknow.
Badla work has been used in traditional
wear as well as fashion wear especially in bridal costumes and wedding dresses.
