The charm and elegance of South Handlooms Silk sarees

The saree is traditional attire for most Indian women; a national heritage that has also assumed the level of a fashion statement. Traditionally handloom silk sarees have always been used for special occasions like weddings, traditional festivals and as bridal attire. Nowadays parties, important social events, corporate functions are also occasions meant for the use of silk handlooms. Indian weddings are special occasions when the South Handlooms Silk saree is displayed in all its dimensions of variety, finery, opulence and one-upmanship. The Indian party scene, an occasion for fun and enjoyment, a lot of mirth and social exchange, is also an opportune time for women to display their latest acquisitions in Southern handloom silks. Traditional festivals and social functions also provide occasion for the use of Southern Handloom silk sarees.

The popularity of South Handlooms Silk saris
Silk has always been a popular fabric yarn in India where mulberry and other forms of silk are cultivated. South Handloom Silks are famous for their soft feel, rich thread work, attractive motifs and patterns, contrast borders in a wide range of vibrant colours. No wedding or anniversary function is possible, even today, without the Silk ‘Pattu’ sarees being on display. The bride, the women in the family, relatives, guests who attend, all appear in their resplendent silk sarees of different varieties or traditional styles. It is a fine display of new incorporations of designs, patterns, colours and adorning features like zardozi, ari, gota and other forms of embroidery, kundan work, mirror work, chamki work etc.

Silks have always been a favourite with women because of the rich look, airy comfort and the exclusiveness in price compared to other fabrics. Especially costly pure silk sarees that range from 15000 rupees onwards to touch a lakh and above, are jealously guarded, worn with caution and care exercised at every step, to be worn for grand exclusive occasions only. There is a healthy mix even of different regions wherein the saree could have the attractive and appealing features of different traditional styles. Such as the modern designer prints being block printed on the body, the attach border having exquisite embroidery and the pallu portraying scenes from nature in eco-colours, hand painted in tribal art.

Supernet Sarees Make ‘Fine’ Fashion Statements

Supernet Sarees are a blend of silk and cotton in different proportions. Their fine transparent weave, attractive designs and beautiful borders, give the women who wear them, a captivating look. Bewitching block prints of geometrical shapes and batik floral designs beautify the Supernet saree. Hand -made designs and the use of fabric paints are also used as an adorning feature for the Supernet to make it look very appealing.

The special features of the SuperNet saree
Basically the Super Net saree is a mesh weave through which hardly anything can pass. The word super indicates the closeness of the warp and weft threads to form a fine lattice network. Due to this fineness or smooth texture of the silken threads, the Supernet is able to attain a lustre and shimmering effect, that is very much appealing. Additionally this feature also provides for seamless inclusions of brilliant crochet work, embroidery and other intricately woven adornments that elevates the elegance further. Having a good affinity to take on most dyes, the supernet is a bright display of vibrant colours of pleasing hues. Borders of matching colours and pallus or ‘end pieces’ showcase the traditional finesse in appropriate choices of design, colour and mix. In some traditional pockets like Banaras, the brocades that are attached have intricate designs and exquisite thread work to transform the look of the fabric from average to sensational. Once restricted to limited pockets in North India, it is today more widespread with variants like Chanderi Supernet, Kota Supernet, Banarasi Supernet, Ghicha supernet, based on the traditional hub that weaves it.

The Pochampally cotton salwar kameez - inspirational handloom weave

Pochampally, in Telangana, India, is well-known for its Pochampally brand of fabrics, the saree and the shalwar kameez, the base fabric being cotton, silk or a blend of the two. The exquisite finish of the Pochampally salwar suit comes through the dyeing and weaving of pre-coloured threads which are dyed according to the Ikat or Ikkat technique and then woven on handlooms.
The special technique of the Pochampally cotton salwar suit
The Ikkat technique involves applying bindings which resist dye penetration to the threads in pre-determined patterns and then dyeing the threads. These threads are then woven to produce the desired pattern. When several colours are used, the dyeing process on the threads is repeated for each of the colours chosen. Then the fabric is woven with the multi-coloured threads into the pattern. Within the ikkat style of dyeing are methods of single-ikkat and double-ikkat.

Single ikkat has two variants – warp ikkat where the warp threads are dyed after applying resists according to pattern on the warp threads. After that, only, is the weaving done. In the weft ikkat it is the weft threads which are coloured by applying resists before the dyeing and then weaving is done. In either case the dyeing is done prior to the weaving so carefully that the pattern emerges as the weave progresses. In the double ikkat method both the warp and weft threads are dyed before weaving. Alternatively, in the tie-dye method it is quite the reverse of the Ikkat style of dyeing. Here the threads are first woven and the resist bindings then applied to the fabric before dyeing it.

Attractive features of the Pochampally shalwar kameez
The painstaking efforts of the weavers in maintaining the purity of dyeing and weaving, including the control and placement of threads during the weave contribute largely to the complexity of the weave patterns and pleasing appearance of the sarees. Colours that are employed for the dyeing of threads are fast and well-chosen. No wonder the outcomes of the Pochampally salwar kamiz display an extraordinary ethnic skill that is hard to match. Current trends see Pochampally handloom Punjabi suits with ethnic patterns, shiny zari borders and designer pallus with stylish designs and colourful prints.

Buy online Pochampally cotton chudidar kameez online at Unnati Silks
Unnatisilks has many exquisite creations in Pochampally cotton shalwar suit that one can buy online. There are two special features that are notable. The stripes pattern design on the cotton kamiz and the accompanying dupattas The kameez has attractive motifs in ikkat prints or ikkat weaving and borders with patola weaving. Colours chosen are bright and vibrant hues. Dupatta with designer prints, traditional patola weaving, naksi and kantha work are a delightful accompaniemt.

The unusual attraction of the Narayanpet handloom cotton sarees

The Narayanpet Saree, though woven in silk also sports a range of exotic and appealing handloom cotton sarees traditionally from Narayanpet, a town in Telangana, India. Narayanpet Sarees originally came through a Marathi influence; patronage of Shivaji, the Marathi ruler.
The appeal of the Narayanpet Cotton Saree
The Narayanpet handloom cotton sarees are known for the the body colour contrasts against the pallu, the characteristic zari border and stripes, fine light colour floral block prints on dark coloured backdrops with multi-colour tiranga borders, a special bandhani pattern design with woven bootis on the saree and large bootis bock printed on the designer pallu - all that elevate the look and appeal of the saree. It generally has a good fineness count also. Higher the count, finer the material! Employing vegetable dyes to the extent possible, the Narayanpet Saree has fast colours. Narayanpet handloom sarees are traditionally woven in the interlocked-weft technique which improves the strength of the weave.
