Mysore Silk Sarees Portray Grandeur In The Purest Form

The traditional Mysore Silk saree is regal in appearance and inspiring in its unchallenged position of pride. A royal fabric of grandeur, the Mysore silk saree was originally meant exclusively for the Royal family. Over a period of time it was available for high ranked and special status persons in society. Today it is available to the market. Despite numerous other saree varieties flooding the market, neither has its demand reduced nor its appeal diminished for the undimmed finery and exquisite workmanship that are its hallmarks of excellence continue to remain as they always were.

The appeal of the Mysore Silk Saree
The distinguishing feature of this saree is the usage of pure silk and 100% pure gold zari (a golden coloured thread containing 65% of silver and 0.65% of gold). The Mysore silk sari is famous for the purity of its silk and a very painstaking process in its making, which ensures that every aspect of the sari is perfect. It has place of pride for its sheen, the purity of the zari used, its softness and its non-crushable quality. The sari rarely fades owing to the purity of the gold and silver used. Despite being a costly and delicate fabric, it does not require excessive care for its maintenance. Mysore silk saris are further enhanced with the use of kasuti embroidery, thickly woven pallus, lovely colour experiments.

Kasuti work involves embroidering intricate patterns like chariot, lamps and conch shells on the fabrics. Locally available materials are used for Kasuti. The patterns are stitched with different varieties of stitches to obtain the desired pattern. Kasuti is a traditional form of embroidery practiced in Karnataka, India. Kasuti work is very intricate and sometimes involves putting a large number of stitches by hand on traditional silk sarees. The Karnataka Handicrafts Development Corporation (KHDC) has Intellectual Property rights on Kasuti.

The Pochampally cotton salwar kameez – inspirational handloom weave

Pochampally, in Telangana, India, is well-known for its Pochampally brand of fabrics , the saree and the shalwar kameez, the base fabric being cotton, silk or a blend of the two. The exquisite finish of the Pochampally salwar suit comes through the dyeing and weaving of pre-coloured threads which are dyed according to the Ikat or Ikkat technique and then woven on handlooms.

The special technique of the Pochampally cotton salwar suit
The Ikkat technique involves applying bindings which resist dye penetration to the threads in pre-determined patterns and then dyeing the threads. These threads are then woven to produce the desired pattern. When several colours are used, the dyeing process on the threads is repeated for each of the colours chosen. Then the fabric is woven with the multi-coloured threads into the pattern. Within the ikkat style of dyeing are methods of single-ikkat and double-ikkat.

Single ikkat has two variants – warp ikkat where the warp threads are dyed after applying resists according to pattern on the warp threads. After that, only, is the weaving done. In the weft ikkat it is the weft threads which are coloured by applying resists before the dyeing and then weaving is done. In either case the dyeing is done prior to the weaving so carefully that the pattern emerges as the weave progresses. In the double ikkat method both the warp and weft threads are dyed before weaving. Alternatively, in the tie-dye method it is quite the reverse of the Ikkat style of dyeing. Here the threads are first woven and the resist bindings then applied to the fabric before dyeing it.

Attractive features of the Pochampally shalwar kameez
The painstaking efforts of the weavers in maintaining the purity of dyeing and weaving, including the control and placement of threads during the weave contribute largely to the complexity of the weave patterns and pleasing appearance of the sarees. Colours that are employed for the dyeing of threads are fast and well-chosen. No wonder the outcomes of the Pochampally salwar kamiz display an extraordinary ethnic skill that is hard to match. Current trends see Pochampally handloom Punjabi suits with ethnic patterns, shiny zari borders and designer pallus with stylish designs and colourful prints.

Modern Art paintings on Sarees

The saree, is a traditional Indian garment widely worn across the world. The Indian saree makes a wonderful moving canvas for modern art paintings. Fashion designers through the novel idea of displaying modern art in such a sensational way have in a way popularized the art and thrilled the market.
Why Modern Art Paintings
Not content with just abstract designs and additional adornments, fashion designers in India have seen fit to bring an appreciated art onto a mobile canvas that has served two purposes. It has create a new avenue for budding talent in the field of modern art painting, as well as, provided fresh-range fabrics for the market to revel in.

The Process
Exclusive Fabrics like silk are washed, dried and readied before they are hand painted on. The theme before them, painters take anywhere from two to four weeks to paint the designated area using fabric paints. The saree is then lightly steamed, dried and some form of chemical is used to provide the painted portion the lustre and fastness that is required.
What is Modern Art?
Modern art painting includes all artistic works from the latter half of the 19th century up to the 70s and contains themes that depict the character and expressions of this era.

A wave of experimentation and spirit of rebellion, combined to produce works that were a departure from the existing traditions of art that existed at that time. It became a period when tradition took a back seat. While known forms of painting that generally chose religious or mythological subjects with intent to instruct, educate and improve the common lot were in the vogue, they were being fast replaced by avant garde painters who experienced a new freedom by choosing to take up subjects that interested them, especially people, places, experiences of their life that they related to first hand. Further with the emergence of radical thought modern art painters as they came to be known as, let loose their creativity and gave expression on canvas, through their thoughts and ideas on dreams, symbolism, personal iconography and the like that were untouched till then. A lot of introductions like the use of colour and their meanings, the use of non-traditional materials for paintings, and new methods and methodologies in the art have been attributed to this period.
