The gossamer-like weave of the Dhaka Cotton saree

Dhaka cotton or Daccai cotton sarees have their origin in BanglaDesh, but today also finds place in West Bengal, India, known for its fine handloom weaves. The fine muslin like cotton fabric that is known as Daccai Jamdhani on which elaborate and ornate workmanship is done is a saree so sheer that it is a marvel.

The special features of Dhaka Jamdhani Cotton sarees
Initially restricted to light and beige backgrounds, the Dhaka cotton saree has ventured successfully into a new range of coloured sarees. The single warp is usually ornamented with two extra weft followed by the basic ground weft. There are linear or floral motifs that are generously distributed all over the saree and on the border. The pallu is elaborately and exquisitely designed making it tremendously attractive. Once woven painstakingly by hand over the old fashioned Jala loom, certain innovations have simplified the manner in which it is woven. The Daccai Jamdhani saree is extremely soft to the touch and its easy flow follows the contours of the body perfectly.

Cotton silk sarees - fine cotton fabric blends

Cotton and silk blends in different proportions make up the cotton silk sarees where the counts vary from coarse to fine based on the closeness of the fabric weave. Cotton and silk are both natural fibres with good qualities of strength, durability and soft feel, are light weight, airy and are very comfortable. No wonder they are preferred for all-day wear for any occasion. In cotton silk the proportion of cotton to silk generally has a higher proportion for cotton hence cotton silk is not very lustrous.

Kota Cotton Sarees, Online Kota Doria Cotton Saris, Sarees in India, Unnati Silks

Rajasthan is well known for its fine Kota Doria Muslin sarees. Kota doria as the name suggests is made in Kota city of Rajasthan. It is a type of cotton cloth that becomes special because of its weave. Kota Doria first originated in the captivating land of Mysore where the weavers who practiced this craft were known as ‘Masurias’.

The weaving is done using pure cotton threads but the style is so varying that it makes the final cloth translucent and gives it cross check pattern locally known as khat. The procedure of making this fabric involves winding, warping, dyeing, sizing, drafting, denting, piercing and  finally design setting. This is the most open weave fabric woven in India.

The weave is result of sufficient spacing between super fine warp and weft threads with slightly thick thread at regular counts to produce a very subtle check pattern. Also, the thicker threads make the cloth strong and more durable. The thin fiber maintains its softness, delicacy and gives it translucency and gossamer appeal.

Comfort and resilient are the two defining factors of what makes Kota Doria is a popular fabric with many. Whether it is for a sari or a salwar suit, it can be carried with utmost ease, especially in the hot and humid summer months.

The Rajasthani royalty favored this fabric since it portrayed effortless grace and style. The saris were mostly white or beige in color. However, with recent changes and modifications being made to the fabric, endless amounts of colors and adornments of all kinds are included as well. Initially, the fabric was only made up of cotton, but later silk was weaved in as well, which made it more chic and refined.

Kota cotton saris are designed with plain body with checks that are mainly made of a slightly rough cotton texture or plain gold threads with floral zari borders and designer pallus.

Now this cotton sarees are designed with block print motifs with printed floral printed and zari borders and block printed pallus, it is suitable for casual and corporate wear.

Kota cotton saris are suitable for casual and festive occasions and it gives a classy look to the wearer.

The enchanting spreads of the Chanderi Silk saree

Chanderi in M.P., India is traditionally the home of the famed Chanderi sarees, known for the stylistic Bootis and extraordinary threadwork on fine weaves in silk and cotton. The Chanderi silk saree has been familiar for its mostly light to moderate hues in pleasing patterns and its most attractive feature – the large bootis. With plain to moderately adorned patterns or motifs and small but attractive coloured borders and exquisite pallus with some adornment, Chanderi Silks have been popular for the extremely fine texture and sheer quality.

The charm and allure of the Chanderi Silk Saree
It is the single filature method of weaving and the fineness of the yarn used that produces the outcome of a fabric so sheer and so fine in texture, that it is a tribute to the spirit of the weavers who are the authors of this wonderful creation. Enhancing the beauty further is the ‘Booti’, ‘Butti’ or motif, which is an interlaced, hand-woven, shape, consisting of gold, silver or copper coated threads. The Asharfi Butti, or Gold Coin shaped Booti has been a popular choice since earlier times, though the pure gold or silver used in its making has given way to tested Zari, which is woven from synthetic yarn by needles of different sizes. The bigger version of the ‘Butti’ is popularly known as ‘Butta’.

A major difference in the making methods is that the ‘Bootis’ of hand-woven Chanderi saris, retain their shape and appearance throughout the life of the fabric, with no thread coming out from the ‘Butti’ structure.

The same cannot be said for the one woven from synthetic yarn, which tends to lose the initial shape and appearance after some time. Brilliant floral designs or batik, adorn the Chanderi silk saree, and Buttis once only hand-woven on the fabric, have been replaced by gold-printed ‘Butti’prints on the silk fabric body.

Buy Chanderi silk saris online from Unnati Silks
The elegance, and the grandeur that the Chanderi Saree lends to the wearer, makes it ideal for special occasions, like marriages, weddings, festivals, parties and social functions. It could also serve as corporate-wear.

The Chanderi Silk saris at Unnati display an extraordinary array of Designer prints and neon varieties. There are dark coloured block prints with light and medium multi-coloured fancy borders and designer pallu. Sober to subdued colours with light coloured eye-catching motifs that sensationalize. Half half sarees in matching shades of pastel colours and light-hued motifs with neon borders to heighten the effect. A whole lot of bright and tantalizing neons on display with stunning colour mixes. In fact the wedding Chanderi silk sarees are very eye-filling and exciting, with splendid Bootis and elegant attach patch borders with embroidery to complement.

A traditional display art that decorates fabrics - Appliqué work

Appliqué work in India was once mainly practised in Pipli, Odisha, especially for banners during the Lord Jagannatha Rath Yatra. But today it also finds use as adornment on large canvas fabrics like the saree. The same principle of affixing patches is followed as was earlier but with designs that are modern, abstract and trendy that appeal to the market.

Banner making to fabric art – Appliqué work
Appliqué work refers to the technique by which patterns are created by attaching a smaller coloured patch onto a larger base fabric mostly of contrasting colour or texture. The attaching could be by stitching, or gluing the patch on the larger fabric. The edges of the patch may have the ends folded under or left as they are. The attaching is done by straight stitch, satin stich or reverse Appliqué. Embroidery machines have taken over what earlier used to be done by hand. Its application is best suited for any work that has to be viewed from a distance such as banners.

The special appeal of Appliqué work on sarees The motifs for the Appliqué may be white or coloured with the fabric body of contrasting colour and could have intricate embroidery and mirror work also to make it highly ornamental. Motifs generally are elephant, parrot, peacock, duck, creepers, flowers such as lotus and jasmine.

Half moon, Sun and Rahu (mythical Rakshasa) are also popular subjects. Colours used are limited to red, green, blue, brown and black.

Also contrasts are followed but with a wide range of colours and hues. There is a shift to chemical colours without insistence on organic dyes alone. Patterns and motifs while still including traditional ones have now become more varied and colourful.
